Our History

The Church Plant

Our Vineyard was planted in 1994 under the leadership of Bert and Evelyn Waggoner, who had been the pastors of the Houston Vineyard for ten years. That church sent a team of 40 people who together with the Waggoners had a vision and call from the Lord to plant a new church in the Stafford / Sugar Land area.

The Vineyard Church celebrated its first public worship service in September, 1994, with one hundred participants gathered in rented facilities at the Texas School of Business in southwest Houston. On June 21, 1997, before the church’s third anniversary, ground was broken to build the present facility. The first service in the new building was held March 1, 1998.

Starting in September of 2000, through August of 2009, Bert served both as Senior Pastor of The Vineyard Church and National Director for Vineyard U.S.A.

Leadership Transition

After Bert informed the church that he would be resigning as Senior Pastor at the end of August 2009 (while continuing as National Director for Vineyard U.S.A.), the church chose Reagan Waggoner to be the new Senior Pastor. The transition was made officially on August 31, 2009.

Reagan and Deanna had assisted in the planting of The Vineyard from the beginning, and Reagan had served in many capacities through the years, most recently as Associate Senior Pastor.

Some other highlights:

Many Small Groups meet during the week to help people connect with God and one another. Children’s, youth, young adult, and other ministries are flourishing. The Alpha Course (a practical introduction to the Christian faith) is helping newcomers connect with God. “VLearning” provides teaching, training, and mentoring for adults in all aspects of the Bible and Christian life and character. The church is an extension site of the Vineyard Leadership Institute and Vineyard Bible Institute. “Community Care Ministries” provide an important resource for many friends struggling in various ways. Impact Ministries (both in mercy and missions) is a vital part of our outreach. Other ministries are too numerous to list here.

In addition to church planting and ministries in other countries, The Vineyard has planted two thriving churches in the Houston area (Trinity Vineyard in Cypress and The Katy Vineyard).

In 2009, the Ministry Annex – which provides for children’s ministry, youth ministry, and other venues – was completed and has proved a vital addition to our facility.
